Let’s be honest: Predicting what might come next with Donald Trump’s second term is the equivalent of playing the lottery. But there are bits and pieces of evidence here and bits and pieces of evidence there to suggest that Congress is pushing back on the president’s agenda and calls to action. And the stock market’s free fall will increase the anger felt throughout the US about the president. Members of Congress should expect to be on the receiving end of plenty of phone calls from upset constituents.
The president’s promise of “Liberation Day” through laying down tariffs against countries big and small has been a disaster. The president’s assertions that a tariff war will have short-term negative but then long-term positive implications for the US is not believed by wide swaths of the country. Viewed another way, Americans are reaching a conclusion that Trump has gone too far.
Presuming Trump doesn’t change tack, and, again, guessing what he’ll do might be reckless at this point, would Congress determine that impeachment is necessary? One of his many allies says it’s a possibility. According to one report, a prominent Democrat is itching to put a plan in place.
Unless and until impeachment is undertaken, we’re in rumor and bluster land. But let’s also not deny that if he were impeached and then removed from office, there would be violence. And those spasms of hate would likely be seen throughout the country; Washington would not be the only place where chaos might rein.
Irresponsible of me to write of such a scenario? I’ll leave that to you to decide, but only the most naive of people would think that the ouster of the president wouldn’t come with a bloody response.
